Oh, The 10th Kingdom, you odd, endlessly quotable, magnificent beast. When the miniseries aired in 2000, I was immediately obsessed. An adventure story that takes place in a world where the fairy tales we know are part of history plus a fantastically weird love story? And Dianne Wiest plays the bad guy? Um, yes please.

A predecessor to Once Upon a Time, the fairy tale references are sprinkled throughout the ten hour (!) miniseries. While the plot draws a lot of inspiration from Snow White there are nods to a multitude of other fairy tales from Cinderella to Rumpelstiltskin.

The 10th Kingdom follows the story of Virginia and her father from their home in New York to the magical ten kingdoms where they are tasked to help a prince regain his throne from his wicked stepmother. There are trolls, curses, really awkward “pop culture” references and most importantly, Wolf. Wolf is my favorite part of The 10th Kingdom. He’s a wonderfully weird character, who acts as both Virginia’s guide and her love interest. He also has some of the best lines in the miniseries, including his occasional exclamation of “huff, puff!” Did I mention he’s played by Scott Cohen, who in my humbles, is not so terrible to look at.

Though parts of The 10th Kingdom are dated, the mini-series is pretty darn fun to watch. If anything, you’ll be able to incorporate some fun fairy tale-esque catchphrases into your every day vocabulary. Huff, puff.
